Golden Tempel in Amritsar

Punjab, a particularly fascinating tour through India

A trip to India is always an experience. I am therefore very happy with the unique tour through India that took me from Amritsar on to the Golden Triangle all the way to the land of Maharadja’s & Maharani’s, Rajasthan.

In order not to make my blog too long, I have decided to divide it into chapters. This way it remains fascinating to read and you can come back later for some more updates on the next part of my trip.

Welcome to Amritsar

From Brussels my journey went via Doha to Amritsar. The experience is somewhat different when you arrive at this airport than when you opt for a metropole such as Mumbai or Delhi. In just 20 minutes I was outside the airport building where I was met by my local team.

Barely 30 minutes later and I could go straight to my room upon arrival at my hotel. The advantage of organized traveling comes in super useful when your flight arrives in the middle of the night and the only thing you can think is off to go to sleep as soon as possible.

The Golden Temple in Amritsar

Because of the warm temperature, which went over more than 50 degrees due to a heat wave, we decided to visit the temple in the evening. Of course, religion has always been and is still a part of living in India for many. Needless to say that the Golden Temple receives numerous visitors every day as well as travellers from across the globe.

It was actually one of the visits I had been looking forward to for a long time. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed. In any case, it struck me that despite the large number of visitors, there was such an energy covered underneath a veil of serenity.

I just took off my shoes and wandered around the premises, to just enjoy the surroundings. After some time I decided to sit down at a quiet location, all by myself. I always enjoy some alone time, as it gives me the opportunity to absorb the life around the temple as well to feel the energy of this remarkable and unique location.

But only a few minutes later I was suddenly surrounded by a group of local women who came to sit around me. Of course they could just as well have sat somewhere else, there was plenty of room anyway. And then I thought to myself, this is India. And I enjoyed it anyway, observing the women as they were also observing me.

Foodies heaven in Punjab

Besides Amritsar, I also made a stop in Chandigarh. Punjab is clearly a rich region. A region of farmers. But also a region that is in full development with a road infrastructure that is impressive and that is also in full expansion.

But what I especially remember about Punjab is the incredibly delicious cuisine. I may come from Kerala myself and I am a huge fan of Kerala cuisine. The local dishes from Punjab will undoubtedly leave you wanting more.

The food experiences in India have once again made it clear to me that good food is really part of the Indian culture. Logical because it is a moment that you can share with others, enjoy being together and tasting the local dishes. A perfect mix!

Why I would go back to Punjab?

During my visit to Punjab the temperature went through the roof. Because of this I was not able to do all the sightseeing I actually wanted to do. But besides that, it is a region I had never been to before. And of course as a traveller you are always curious about new places.

The big cities in Punjab are very modern, the food was very tasty and the people were also very kind and friendly. In addition, Amritsar & Chandigarh are smaller cities compared to the huge cities that are Mumbai and Delhi and they both breath an atmosphere of conviviality.

Although I never need an excuse to go back to India, now I certainly have a reason to return to Punjab!
